The 2008/09 Project Success culminated the year in grand fashion by taking 12 Southeastern High School of Technology students to the annual 100 Black Men National Conference in New York, NY. Program Chairman, Brian Olatunji, says "My assessment of the overall trip was extremely positive". I consider the engagement amongst the youth (ours as well as others), the opportunity to travel outside of their normal environment, and their exposure to networking with their interaction with various members of 100 chapters nationwide through the “autograph, please” competition the most vital and influential aspects of the trip. Given my involvement with our young men over the past year, witnessing the maturity of the students is a surreal experience and gives me hope we are contributing to the development of these young men. photos

Health screenings at Ford Field
100 Black Men of Greater Detroit and the Michigan Department of Community Health, led by 100 member Bill Toples, organized the event as a way to get African American men health screenings before they suffer from a serious illness. "Preventitive maintenance is a way to enjoy a healthier lifestyle" Toples said. Never to young or old to learn how to take care of your body. After the screenings, all ate breakfast and then were given separate lectures about living healthy. The youth got a tour of the stadium and actual mini work out on the field. An estimated 200-300 people attended and nearlly all received some form of health screening. The Health and Wellness committee of 100 Black Men hope to continue this effort on an annual basis.
Dr. Ray Littleton (HFHS) and Dr. Herb Smitherman (WSU School of Medicine) provided overview of health data and steps individuals should take to imporove their health.

Smart Edge is a financial education program aimed at helping people with making more informed personal financial decisions. The seminars covered personal budgets, credit, and share how these items can help you negotiate better when applying for credit or a loan. The seminars also discussed the credit scoring process and helped attendees unlock that mystery. Facilitator Don Ferguson, of GMAC, trained 100BM members, family and friends to be ambassadors for the program. "Several more seminars for the community are planned now that we have trained personnel to facilitate" says Ferguson. photos click here
