Dr. Roy D. Harris has served in the field of education for over 20 years in a variety of positions throughout the K-12 arena. The positions held include classroom teacher, athletic director, vice principal, and principal in both the public school setting and the charter school setting.
Known for his commitment to urban student academic success, Dr. Harris is a lifelong learner and veteran of the United States Navy graduating from Detroit Central High School in 1986 and receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy after 10 years of service in 1996. After his military service, Dr. Harris completed requirements for his B.A. degree from Norfolk State University in 1998 majoring in English and graduating cum laude. Dr. Harris returned to Detroit in 1998 and started his 2nd career as a classroom teacher. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Harris completed requirements for a M.A. degree from the University of Detroit Mercy in 2001 majoring in education administration and graduating magna cum laude. In 2018, Dr. Harris completed requirements for his Doctor of Education degree from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois graduating with dissertation of distinction. His dissertation efforts focused on those barriers that prevented algebra success among urban Black males 14-16 years of age.
For the past six years, Dr. Harris has worked exclusively with 9th – 12th grade students and staff to create multiple pathways towards college readiness. Dr. Harris was essential to the development of instructional practices that resulted in a 66% increase in the number of African American students passing the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) examinations as recently as the 2017-2018 school year—The highest percentage increase for this population of students in the State of Michigan.
Dr. Harris currently serves as a high school administrator and continues to support teachers in their efforts to deliver high quality rigorous instruction and continues to support students in their quest for academic success with specific attention given toward the academic success of the urban Black male student.
